The theoretical development of planar near-field antenna measurements is usually based on this plane wave spectrum representation of electromagnetic fields. This work provides a detailed derivation of the coordinate-free form of the near-field to far-field transform that is central to the planar near-field measurement methodology.The near field and far field are regions of the electromagnetic field around an object, such as a transmitting antenna, or the result of radiation scattering off an object. Non-radiative near-field behaviors dominate close to the antenna or scattering object, while electromagnetic radiation far-field behaviors dominate at greater distances.
