Be sure that you have a top level layer, otherwise it will happen that the page number will be hidden by content like images or other frames. Make a text frame outside the border frame, but inside the page edge. Type > Insert Special Characters > Marks > Current Page Number. Page numbering would obviously run from 1-10 in each of the three different documents. But when imported into a "Book", page numbers should now run from 1-10 in the first doc, 11-20 in the second, and 21-30 in the third. This is how you want things to go, especially if additional pages need to be added to any of the three documents.
